Last night was the 81st Annual Golden Globes Awards, held at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles, and boy was it something. The star-studded event had barely begun when the controversies came pouring in. Most having to do with some ill-intentioned jokes by this year’s host, Comedian Jo Koy, but as the show continued, I noticed yet another mishap. A lack of representation, or well, a lack of Latino representation. Category after category, announcer after announcer, and nada. What few people did pop up, often didn’t win, or more often than not, weren’t even nominated. So, in an effort to rectify this, let’s highlight some of the Latino celebrities who were at the Golden Globes, spotlighting their accomplishments, and how great they looked celebrating them.
Up first, Selena Gomez, a lady in red who looked absolutely stunning in her custom silk ruby-red Armani Privé dress. The fit and flair accentuated her waist, while the asymmetrical ending added intrigue to the design. Gomez was nominated for Best Female Actor In A TV Series- Musical or Comedy for her lead role as Mabel Mora in Season 3 of Only Murder’s In The Building. Though the captivating Hulu Original Series did not win, with the award instead going to Ayo Edebiri for her role in The Bear, it received five nominations this year for Best TV Series, Best Male Actor, and Best Supporting Female Actor.

Up next, the snub of the century. At least, according to me, an avid Pedro Pascal stan, and The Last of Us fanatic. It is, you guessed it, Chilean actor Pedro Pascal, who looked dashing in his Bottega Veneta attire, wearing some cozy black wool pants paired with an adorable black and white patterned sweater. I would be remiss if I didn’t mention the unfortunate, though fashionable, sling he wore on his arm after suffering an apparent fall. Pascal was nominated Best Male Actor In A TV Series- Drama for his iconic portrayal of beloved video game character come to life, Joel Miller in HBO’s adaptation of The Last of Us. Watching him lose this award was almost as shocking as when the winner, Kieran Culkin, jokingly added “suck it, Pedro” in his speech. The joke entirely lost on me, but I digress. The Last of Us received three nominations this year, including Best TV Series- Drama and Pascal’s counterpart and former Game of Thrones costar Bella Ramsey’s nomination for Best Female Actor In A TV Series.

And last but certainly not least, America Ferrera who was at the Golden Globes supporting the entire cast for a little movie you might have heard of called Barbie that she stared in this summer. While Ferrera herself was not nominated, the instant classic received 10 nominations, including Best Female Actor In A Film for Margot Robbie, Best Director In A Film for Greta Gerwig, and three for Best Original Song. Ferrera was a featured announcer, alongside icon Kevin Costner, as the pair presented the award Selena Gomez was nominated for. Ferrera looked gorgeous in a floor-length shimmering silver Dolce & Gabbana gown that she used to walk all the way up the stage to accept Barbie’s Golden Globe for the Cinnematic and Box Office Achievement Honor.

That wasn’t the entirety of Latino representation at the Golden Globes. Puerto Rican actress Liza Colón-Zayas joined the cast of The Bear in accepting the award for Best TV Series- Musical or Comedy, and icons George Lopez and Gabriel “Fluffy” Iglesias were hilarious in presenting the award for Best Male Actor In A TV Series- Musical or Comedy (which coincidently went to Jeremy Allen White from The Bear). Still, for all the incredible shows that came out this year with Latino leads, representation was shockingly low. Here’s to hoping the year ahead will bring even more Latino leads, Latino directors, and Latino talent to the Golden Globe stage!
