AUSTIN, Texas — Hispanic Heritage Month celebrations are getting an early start in Austin as Latinitas joins JCPenney for “Somos Latinitas,” an evening dedicated to Latino culture, creativity, leadership and community.
The signature celebration will take place September 12, 2026, at Austin PBS, bringing together families, community members, supporters and local leaders for an evening of culture, music and inspiring stories.
One of the evening’s special moments will be the recognition of Austin City Council Member Vanessa Fuentes as an outstanding Latina community leader. Fuentes will be honored for her public service, leadership and commitment to uplifting families and communities across Austin.
Celebrating the Next Generation of Latina Leaders
At the heart of “Somos Latinitas” is the mission of Latinitas, an Austin-based nonprofit that empowers girls and young women through media, technology, leadership and cultural programming.
Throughout the evening, guests will hear stories from Latinitas students and families and learn how the organization helps young people develop confidence, explore careers and technology, embrace their cultural identities and discover the power of their voices.
The celebration will also feature JCPenney’s 2026 Hope & Wonder Collection, highlighting Latino culture, traditions, creativity and representation.
Guests can also enjoy live music and cultural performances, curated bites and beverages, and opportunities to connect with the community.
More than an event, “Somos Latinitas” is a celebration of the people, stories and traditions that make Austin’s Latino community vibrant—and a reminder of the importance of investing in the next generation of Latina leaders.
